PhD Research Fellow in Technology with specialization in ICT


The University of Agder invites applications for a full-time fixed-term appointment as PhD candidate in Technology/Information and Communication Technology for a period of three years. The position is currently located in Grimstad, Norway. The starting date is as soon as possible or to be negotiated with the Faculty.

 

The department has three large and active research groups in Information and Communication Technology including eight Professors, 20 Associate Professors/Assistant professors and about 20 Research Fellows on the PhD programme in ICT. The Department of ICT pursues a variety of research interests, focusing especially on ICT and crisis management, eLearning and eHealth. The department has successfully led a number of large research projects funded by the Research Council of Norway, the EU research programmes FP7 and H2020 as well as national and international industries.

 

This open position is associated with Centre for Integrated Emergency Management (CIEM), targeting design, development and testing and evaluations of simulations and participatory serious games that have the potential to engage citizens across the globe to improve disaster preparedness and create an environment of sustainable growth. This work will be conducted in cooperation with the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre in The Hague, and its partners in reducing the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events on vulnerable people. By working on interdisciplinary and practice-oriented research projects the Ph.D research fellow will advance the state of the art in scenario and gaming design, and contribute to gaining new insights into modeling risks, risk perception and resilience. To accomplish this, the position will involve novel use of smart devices in CIEMLab, a competence center where public and private sector meet academia for innovation and knowledge exchange.

 

Research topics:

 

The position is intended to address issues related to the design and development of games to enable communities to more efficiently prepare for and respond to disasters. Potential research topics for the PhD study include, but are not limited to the following:
•Developing, designing and testing simulations and games for situational awareness, resource allocation & planning, forecasting, and the consequences of intervention.
•Including smart devices, including wearable sensors, smart glasses, smartphones, in augmented reality games.
•Analysis of communication, decision-making and coordination structures; information needs and user requirements.
•Construction of serious gaming and evaluation scenarios that enable efficient and effective training, testing, and learning in the context of resilience and climate risk management.

The candidate must hold a master’s degree in ICT, Computer Science or a similar/related field and document competence in areas relevant to the position.

 

Personal suitability, good teamwork and communication skills, inventiveness, and a proactive approach, will be emphasized in the evaluation as well as relevant practical experience. The PhD Research Fellow will be expected to contribute to an active research community that promotes the personal and professional growth of the doctoral candidate. The following requirements must be met:
•Strong academic credentials, written and spoken English proficiency. Proficiency in French is a plus.
•Background in several of the following: Serious gaming, multi-criteria decision analysis, simulations (System Dynamics, Agent-Based Modeling), optimization, disaster risk management, social media analytics, scenario planning, emergency and crisis management.
•Interest in several of the following: Probabilistic modeling/reasoning under uncertainty, decision analysis, coordination modeling, complex systems, human-computer-interaction, and data analytics.

The PhD Research Fellow must be admitted to the PhD Programme in Technology, with ICT as specialization, within three months of appointment. More information about the programme and a complete list of admission requirements can be found here.

 

The following admission requirements apply to the PhD program:
•The average grade for courses included in the bachelor's degree (or equivalent) must be B (or equivalent) or higher;
•The average grade for courses included in the master's degree (or equivalent) must be B (or equivalent) or higher;
•The master's thesis (or equivalent) must have a grade B (or equivalent) or higher when the candidate is admitted to the PhD program;
•The successful applicant must have written and spoken English proficiency;
•The position places great demands on the applicant’s capacity for independent goal-oriented work, ability to concentrate as well as good communication and team-work skills in cooperation with research colleagues both inside and outside the university.

Applicants from some countries must document their English proficiency through one of the following tests with the stated results or better:
•TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language with a minimum score of 550 on the Paper-based Test (PBT), or 80 on the Internet based Test (iBT)
•IELTS – International English Language Testing System, with a result of at least 6.0.

Please check this list to see if an English test is required. Possible categories of applicants from particular countries may be exempted.

 

Please note that the English test requirement applies to applicants from most countries according to the list mentioned above. No other tests will be approved, and certifications/statements cannot replace a test.

 

Applications from applicants who already hold a PhD will normally not be considered.

The position is remunerated according to the State salary scale, salary plan 17.515, code 1017, salary grade 50 (NOK 430.500). A 2 % compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
