Jeannette Sutton

Jeannette Sutton is a Disaster Sociologist and a Research Associate at the Natural Hazards Center, University of ColoradoBoulder.  Her primary focus of research is the uses of emerging technologies and social media in crisis and disaster situations.  She received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a focus on collective behavior following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.  Dr Sutton has served as the lead investigator on a number of projects funded through the National Science Foundation, Department of Homeland Security, and private foundations. 

Her areas of expertise include the socio-behavioral aspects of disaster warning systems, technologies for communication and coordination in disaster response and their virtual applications, social networks and community resiliency, and community preparedness for disasters.

The author of numerous academic publications, Sutton’s research has been highlighted in Nature, Reason, and Emergency Management Magazine. Dr. Sutton regularly consults with public sector organizations from the federal to the local level and is a sought after speaker both nationally and internationally.
